Form 2290 Deadline Approaching: What Motor Carriers Need to Know Before August 31

For many trucking companies and businesses that operate heavy vehicles, August 31 is an important compliance deadline. If your organization operates taxable highway motor vehicles with a gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more, you may be required to file IRS Form 2290, also known as the Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT) Return.

Missing the deadline can lead to penalties, interest charges, and registration issues, making it essential for carriers to understand their filing obligations and submit the required documentation on time.

What Is Form 2290?

Form 2290 is the IRS tax return used to report and pay the Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT). The tax applies to highway motor vehicles with a taxable gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more that operate on public highways.

According to the IRS, the current tax period runs from July 1 through June 30 of the following year. Vehicles first used on public highways in July must have Form 2290 filed by August 31.

Who Must File Form 2290?

You generally must file Form 2290 if you register and operate:

  • Trucks weighing 55,000 pounds or more
  • Tractor-trailers
  • Heavy-duty construction vehicles
  • Certain buses and specialty vehicles that meet the weight threshold

Even if you expect a vehicle to travel fewer than 5,000 miles annually (or 7,500 miles for agricultural vehicles), you are still required to file the return and report the vehicle as suspended if it qualifies.

Why the August 31 Deadline Matters

For vehicles first used during July, Form 2290 and any applicable tax payment must be submitted by August 31. Filing late can result in:

  • IRS penalties
  • Interest charges on unpaid taxes
  • Delays in vehicle registration or renewals
  • Administrative challenges when proof of filing is required

The IRS notes that the filing deadline is based on when the vehicle was first used on a public highway, not when the vehicle registration is due.

What Is Schedule 1?

Once Form 2290 is accepted, the IRS provides a stamped Schedule 1 as proof of filing and payment.

Many state motor vehicle agencies require this document before processing registration or registration renewals for heavy vehicles. Keeping Schedule 1 readily available can help avoid delays and compliance issues.

Filing Deadlines for Newly Added Vehicles

Not every vehicle has an August 31 deadline.

If a taxable vehicle is first placed into service after July, Form 2290 is generally due by the last day of the month following the vehicle’s first month of use. For example:

  • First used in August → Filing deadline September 30
  • First used in September → Filing deadline October 31
  • First used in October → Filing deadline November 30

The IRS provides a complete filing schedule for vehicles entering service throughout the year. [irs.gov]
